Aino Fairy Tales, Nos. 1-2: The Hunter in Fairy Land [and] The Birds' Party
The first two (of three) illustrated fairy tales of the Aino (i.e. Ainu) people, as told by Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935), a notable British scholar of Japanese culture who lived in Japan between 1873-1911 under the status of a O-yatoi Gaikokujin. The Aino series did not catch on and was discontinued after the third issue.
Boston/Tokyo: Ticknor & Co./Kobunsha, 1887. 2 volumes. Color woodblock illustrations throughout. First editions in English. Publisher's color pictorial wrappers, bound side-stitched in the Japanese style, printed on double leaves. Moderate overall wear, many edges creased. Pages with some toning throughout.
