Fables

Wilkie, although known "the Scottish Homer" and praised by Hume, did not find exceeding success in this work and it was not reprinted in his lifetime. Largely known for his Epigoniad (1757) [Item #429, 2nd edition, 1759]. The plates illustrate his poetical renditions of fables. According to the DNB, the book contains "sixteen Fables in iambic tetrameter reminiscent of Gay, with an added pithy and pointed Dialogue between the Author and a Friend. The sixteenth Fable, The Hare and the Partan [i.e. Crab] is a notable exercise in the vernacular of Midlothian." Provenance: Bookplate of John Carre, Esqr. of Nisbet. Bookplate or label possibly removed from rear pastedown.

London/Edinburgh: Edward and Charles Dilly/A. Kincaid and J. Bell, 1768. Illustrated with 17 plates by Simpson after Wale, including frontispiece. [xii], 140 pp. Octavo. ESTC T138559. First Edition.
