Item 233Esquisse d'un Tableau Historique des Progres de l'Espirit Humain
Early publication of the important posthumous work by Condorcet (cf. PMM 246, first edition), appearing two years after the first edition. This issue is without a named publisher or place; this fact combined with the relatively cheap paper it is printed on suggests clandestine publication due to piracy or wanting to avoid the scrutiny of the French revolutionary government which Condorcet helped form, but under whose custody he ultimately perished.
[No Place]: [No Publisher], 1797. Portrait frontispiece of Condorcet. [iv], 294, [2] pp. Nouvelle Edition. Period half marbled calf over marbled boards, raised bands, lettering piece, patterned endpapers, Portrait frontispiece.....
